Darren Edgecomb Controversy Explained
Darren Edgecomd fell into a controversy after a grade change at Palm Beach Central High School.
The principal and his former assistant principal agreed to state Education Department probation.
An inquiry conducted by the school district’s inspector general in 2019 discovered that Principal Darren Edgecomb and then-Assistant Principal Laurence Greenberg raised the grades of at least 11 students without the knowledge of their teachers.
The school system allows for grade changes after published report cards, but only in certain instances.
A teacher may request a grade change and provide justification, or the principal may change a student’s grade without teacher input but only with the regional superintendent’s permission.
The former assistant principal who initiated the grade modifications had his educator license revoked for a year, preventing him from working in a job requiring “direct contact with students.”
During the district’s inquiry, Greenberg was removed from Palm Beach Central, and he began working in a “special projects position” at the transportation department in September, according to the district.
He also agreed to two years of state probation. However, that would only apply if he selected a job that required a teaching license.
Greenberg would be required to take an education ethics course during his first year on probation. He would also need help to act as a principal or manage school funds.
