Duane Jones was a cult figure best known for his portrayal of Ben, the resourceful hero of George A. Romero's low-budget zombie film Dem Cua Nhung Thay Ma (1968). Jones was a former English professor and artistic director, and his casting as the hero of the Romero film was the first time an African American actor had been cast in the lead role of a horror film. He went on to appear in a few other B-grade horror movies, but none were as memorable as his first role. Sadly, Jones passed away at the young age of 52 from heart failure.
