He studied art in college and his mother was a well-known artist in St. Louis, Missouri. Jack taught himself to play ragtime piano and is an artist, writer, and musician. He often appeared at the Hobo Convention in Britt, Iowa as well as other Railroad Festivals. Jack Sophir has said that he prefers the name Backwoods Jack. He purchased 23 acres of land in Litchfield and has added over a dozen buildings. He is a regular at auctions and has been a picker since five or six.
